Ba Zi, literally "eight characters", is a Chinese system that reads a person's birth moment as four pairs of characters — year, month, day and hour. Each pair is a heavenly stem and an earthly branch, and together they describe the elemental structure and timing of a life. It is a symbolic framework, not a measurement instrument.

It helps, but you are not blocked. The hour pillar needs the birth hour; without it we can still build three pillars and the element distribution, and the reading will say which conclusions are affected. If your time is approximate, choose the accuracy level in the form and we treat it as approximate rather than pretending it is exact.

Two reasons. It determines the time zone and any daylight saving rule in force at that date, and it gives the longitude needed for true solar time correction. Without it, the hour pillar can be off by up to an hour — which for births near a boundary changes the pillar entirely.

Almost always the boundaries. The year pillar turns at the Beginning of Spring, not at the lunar new year; the month pillar turns at solar terms, not on the first of the month; the day turns at 23:00, not at midnight. Sites that skip these conventions will disagree — and daylight saving periods such as China 1986 to 1991 catch many calculators out.

No — and this is the part we care most about. The chart is computed by fixed calendrical calculation rules and is reproducible: the same birth data always produces the same chart. It is used to compute your chart and, if you choose, to store your reading so you can return to it. Payment for readings is handled entirely by PayPal; we never see or store your card details. We do not sell personal data.
